I make very large, colorful, oil on canvas paintings. My recent work, Schizophrenic Masculinity, deals with the contradictions, inconsistencies, fragility and conventions of black and Caribbean masculinity through portraiture. I generally put paint (or plastic, paper etc) physically onto the subject, take a few photographs and edit into several editions. I then use those as references for a series of paintings.
Kamar Thomas was born and raised in the hills of Port Antonio, Jamaica. He received his BA from Wesleyan University and MFA from the University of Connecticut. He enjoys reading, roaring with laughter and learning about the human condition through irreverent conversation.
